Two sisters: corn & beans

Some plants grow well together and even help each other. Corn makes a great support for climbing beans, and the beans fix nitrogen in the soil that the corn needs.

The blue corn and bayo bean seeds I planted came from Mexico, where there is an old tradition of planting crops together in a milpa. Nutritionally speaking, beans and corn complement each other and provide a varied source of protein.

Here is the corn already shooting up while the bean is making its first leaves. When the bean starts to climb, the corn stalks will be quite tall already.
